Accessing More Storage Space for your Home

Many people have areas of their homes that can be used for more efficient storage. They just don’t know how to access it or where it is.

Here are some easy storage solutions for every space in all types of homes.

1. There’s more to that space underneath the stairs – In some houses, staircases are often hidden gems for easy to access storage areas.  These out-of-the-way areas can be good for storing out-of-season items, (like Christmas trees or winter clothing) in clear plastic storage boxes that you can get from your local cheap shop.  Just remember that these spaces can sometimes get re-cluttered or disorganised if you don’t have adequate lighting or storage bins.
2. Consider alternative spaces – Remember that in some houses, there are hidden spaces behind items, such as bathroom mirrors, wardrobes and kitchen cupboards.  Sometimes hanging hooks or shelves can be an easy way to hide the most general of household items out of sight.
3. Go vertical wherever you can – the higher the better – Open shelving and decorative baskets have made a comeback!  Your items are easy to see and access and they’re out of the way.  Sturdy vertical shelving in your garage (all the way to the ceiling) can give you extra space for those bulky items (such as camping equipment, suitcases, etc), while still keeping enough room available for your vehicles.
4. Remember, that great under-bed storage area – This is one of the classic ideas but often forgotten.  If your bed is too low to fit storage boxes, you could invest in some bed risers (making sure they’re the sturdy kind) and some clear under-bed storage containers.  Remember to clearly label them so that you’re not stuck removing everything to find that one item.
5. Make your furniture work better for you – When you buy your next piece of furniture, think about multi-purposing – there are many clever storage compartments built in to items these days such as coffee tables, ottomans, bench seating, etc. that can be used for more than one funtion, helping you store those extra items out of the way.
